The change cost my friends a lot, shipping boxes to
Cornwall. They all had to go air.

One thing to keep in mind for small packages is that under a
couple pounds, if you send first class it is cheaper than priority or
air but takes the same amount of time. I sent Jean several small
packages and padded envelops over the summer, sometimes breaking a
larger parcel into two smaller ones, and save a lot of money over
parcel post.
It takes the same amount of time, just that they don't
grantee it. And the guarantee is only marketing.

Also, the first class parcel isn't offered online. You have to
go into the post office to get it.

Although this is a disadvantage for small packages people can afford to
receive in good time, the USPO offers flat rate boxes to Europe instead of
seamail. I admit, they are still small and it would not have worked in
the days I was seamailing wooden giraffs and alabaster elephants home
during my sea days. It took so long by the time I got them, I was far
enough removed from the bazaars, night markets or tiny pacific island,
that they seemed alien, in my NY apartment.
But now, I can get sentimental when visiting NJ and send myself all my
favorite US scents like Prell and Kirks Pure Castille, Kelly from Mudtools
can stuff all she can, I pack away longed for Chunckys and Hershey bars
(Still my chocolate of choice - sorry Russell, no would not, however, turn
Belgium chocolate down) or as Nan has faithfully sent us Halloween
packages, all for 39 US dollars in their flat rate boxes. It gets here in
about one week. Seamail is not great for chocolate.
Just when I was getting so proud of myself that I could endure life in
Denmark, subbing Chunkys with Ritter Sports, Hershey bars with a multitude
of sins, Matzah with Wasa and Prell shampoo with some fancy herbal stuff
that at least the same color.
(and Clayart thought I was all Boron Frit subs.)
So, Flat rate, if you are sending 10 lbs maybe even up to 12, in my
pocketbook and pantry, is worthwhile.
Best regards, Alisa in Denmark
