It is a balancing act when it comes to photographing plates. This past
summer we used a hard brick on end covered many times with wide masking tape
to photograph a 22 inch diameter platter. I've used a hard brick "soap"
covered with tape to stand 12 inch plates up. Tape helps not to scratch that
expensive background... if you are careful. A little ball of "Sticky Tack"

secure it some but it's still a balancing act.
