Dear Ingeborg,
I ship through DHL and use my professional account which is
discounted. This was set up through Select members benefits of the
Potters Council.
They pick up at my door. I sent an oversized box with a 22" raku
plaque inside, double boxed. from South Texas to Wiswconsin for $10,
I sent a box full of pots for a Christmas show to Chattanooga for $17.
I think they are good rates.

Marcia,
Have you compared these rates to UPS ground service? Just wondering what the
savings, if any, is?
Is there a pick up charge with them and will they set up an account (net 30),
I assume, like UPS?
Thanks!

I have had UPS break too much. No breakage so far with DHL.
I have not noticed any pickup charge. I think the business account
helps. I didn't have a business account with UPS. I did with Fedex.
But DHL is better.

We won't do business with any business using DHL because they refuse to
deliver out here in a timely fashion. There have been times when a package
sat in the Denver distribution center for ten days because they didn't have
enough packages for our area to make a profitable delivery run. Eventually
they took the packages to the Denver Post Office and mailed them Priority
Mail and we got them the next day. They used to bring packages to the post
office where I was Postmaster and mail them to our customers to avoid a
thirty mile drive.

A company in New Mex that i buy from uses DHL to ship. At first, because of the lower rates (which i pay) that seemed like a good idea.
However, it took over a week (closer to 2) for DHL to deliver the product. If it had been shipped UPS (ground) i'd have had it within 2 shipping days!
This has occurred each time one of my suppliers uses DHL . . . .
So it would seem that it's the old saw . . . cost versus how anxious the customer is to receive the product.

Being in a bg city doesn't help either with DHL. I am in Brooklyn, NY.
I ordered some stuff from Amazon for xmas presents his year. DHL,
which was the shipper amazon chose, left the package on my front stoop
(or something)where it was apparently stolen.
Amazon told me to deal with DHL. they scheduled the driver to come by
my house on 4 separate occasions, but the driver never showed. Finally,
Amazon just replaced the merch and shipped UPS (at my request).
I think I have also mentioned in the past that FedEx told me that they
don't insure artwork or handmade goods - after accepting my money to
insure work I was shipping.

i thought DHL was a pretty low budget shipper, but found that by shipping my product, if they hear a rattle, they stop the shippment to verify everything inside is fine. even if they do not open or actually look, they ding the shipper house for sending a product that has a rattle.
my product has some screws and nuts in it. it rattles.
after the various extra charges my local mailboxes place told me, asked me, to please stop shipping via DHL.
seems it's not uncommon for DHL to add various other extra charges to get back to the rest of the overall rates.
UPS and US Post Office do not charge extra for shipping stuff that rattles.
