kiln shelves in salt?

I need some advice from the group on kiln shelves in a cone 9/10 salt kiln.
In my most recent salt kiln, I used Thorley Mullite shelves. They were an
over-run on an odd size (14.5"x 22") that I picked up at a bargain rate. In
building this new kiln, I plan to acquire a more standard size -- probably
12" x 24" -- so that they'll be easier to replace along the way. I wasn't
particularly pleased with how the Thorley's did in salt. Over time, the salt
build-up on the underside began to crack off and fall into the pots below.
But they were wonderfully cheap!!

Anyway, I am not sure what to get for this next kiln. What shelves have the
rest of you used in salt kilns? How have they held up?

Craig Martell is using some "alumina carbide" shelves to good result, but
hasn't found a source for them. Does anyone know who might make them?

Thanks!

I salt fired for 10 years and always had to scrape the bottom and sides
of the shelves after each firing. I thought everybody did. It scrapes
right off with silicone carbide shelf pieces.

We use nitride bonded silicon carbide shelves from New Castle Refractories
with the Lee's Incredible Kiln Wash from Axner's Pottery Co.. We put the
kiln wash ON ONE SIDE ONLY of our shelves... We fire 9/10 reduction with
terrific results... I feel very confident that this system will work as
well for a ^9/10 salt fire... Marshall

I second what Charles Gareri says above. We use silicon carbide shelves
exclusively in our salt kiln. We scrape the sides and bottoms thoroughly
with a very stiff steel scraper after each firing, and never get any buildup
at all. The shelves hold up very well.
