Will try this question again, first attempt didn't get posted...
I need advice to finish setting up my kiln alarm.
I have a Paragon Viking-28 kiln with digital controller (Sentry 2.0).
It is equipped with an 240-volt AOP outlet described as follows:
"AUXILLARY OUTPUT FOR SENTRY II CONTROLLERS (VENT CONTROL) The AOP
(Auxiliary Output) is an electrical outlet mounted to the kiln. Plug either
a downdraft vent or an external alarm into the AOP. Control the vent with
Cone-Fire or Ramp-Hold modes. "
The socket looks like a regular wall socket you would use in your house
(not like the appliance socket for your washer-dryer).
Arnold Howard has adivised me that I need a 240-volt alarm device, but have
thus far been unable to find one.
My "economy plan" was to have an alarm (or buzzer, or even a clock radio)
plugged into the AOP socket, with a baby monitor as my remote monitoring
method to use when I am in the house adjacent to the studio, and set the
kiln to turn on the device when firing is at target, thus letting me hear
it with the baby monitor.
Can anyone advise me on how to find a 240-volt alarm (or buzzer or radio)
that would plug into this socket?
Thanks,
Floyd Hale

That sounds strange to me. An outlet that LOOKS like a 120v AC
outlet ought to BE a 120v outlet!
Outlets are configured to fit only the voltage-appropriate plugs (to
prevent you from burning up your over-priced Bose Wave radio by
plugging it in there ;-)
Why not simply stick the probes of your voltmeter into the outlet and
read what's available there?
You do have a voltmeter, right? If not Harbor Freight will sell you
an adequate one for $5.

Well, if that's what you really need, a simple solution would be to
go to the "Travel Department" of your nearest department store. They
sell small stepdown transformers for running your 120v appliances in
240v countries. (They are AC adapter-size, but much heavier)

Floyd,
Visit the Grainger web site.
You are looking for a transformer
that takes 240 volts to 120 volts
like the 4R874.
That gives you the 120 volt
supply to run household items
like the monitor or the alarm.

Carl,
Thanks for your simple advice on troubleshooting the AOP outlet on my
Paragon Viking-28 kiln. You were right on the mark. A voltmeter showed
120 volts in that outlet.
I'm not sure why Arnold Howard (Paragon rep and Clayart member) told me to
use a 240-volt device.

Floyd, is your kiln 480 volts? The auxiliary output (AOP) on
those kilns is 120 volts. The voltage of the AOP on 240 or
208 volt kilns matches the voltage of the kiln itself.
