buying just the wheel head

My dad built a kickwheel for me and used a some marine plywood for the
wheelhead (14"). I drilled a couple of holes for my 12" bats, but they =
are
a bit off center - one side of the wheelhead is a little flatter than =
the
other. =20

I'll be using this setup for the forseeable future, but where can I =
purchase
just a metal wheel head (hopefully with holes already drilled!)? I =
looked
on Creative Industries, Sheffield, and a few other sites, and found a =
lot
of wheels for sale, but not the wheel head alone. Googling didn't turn =
up
much, and I checked the archives with limited success.

Thanks!

You might look at this quest as a good opportunity to "Think Outside the
Circle"... considering the cost of a wheel head (and I have shopped for the=
m
before, myself). With slight modification there must be hundreds of discs
out there that would make a perfectly serviceable wheel head for a fraction
of the cost. Your local salvage yard might be a great place to poke
around.

How about the flywheel out of a small auto engine?....or a cast aluminum ca=
r
wheel with an added flat surface? Just throwing that out there. Of course
it's usually easier to just 'find it and order it'...and wait for the post
to bring it to your doorstep.

Hi Keba,

There are ways that you can correct this. It is great that your dad is
willing to help get a wheel under you.
That piece of plywood can be drilled many times to get it right. The unused
holes wont get in the way as long as you are using bats. If there is an "up
and down" issue, the top can be shimmed where it is attached to the flange
that holds it onto the shaft.
OR a second top can be screwed to the first with ,say, dry wall type screws
and thin shims between the two. Reset the bat pins. You may have to
countersink under the lower bat if the pins are too short for two
thicknesses.

That said, a well manufactured wheel head would be much less hassle in the
long run. Try Amaco/Brent at Amaco.com.
I bought two very used products from eBay sales. When I sought help and
some parts to make these wheels 100% they were very responsive. I am sure
you can purchase a wheel head from them or most of the other manufacturers.

Good potting,
Tom King

Keba,
An easy way to build a wheel head for
very little money is a Martin Taperlock
chain sprocket.
Get a 40 series chain with 8-10 " pitch
diameter. Get the needed hub insert to
fit your wheel's shaft. Mount the hub
to the shaft taking care to tighten the bolts
a little bit at a time to keep the hub square
to the shaft. drill 4-6 screw holes through
the plate 1/2 - 1 " in from the bottom of
the teeth to mount the wheel head.
Place the disk of marine plywood
as close to center as possible and mount
it with 4 or 6 short screws from below.
Turn the wheel on and use a marking
pen to draw the final diameter on the face.
Use a scroll saw to trim to the line. With
the wheel running, coarse, medium and fine
sand the rim. Seal with 3-4 coats of poly-
urethane varnish. Carefully locate the center.
draw a line across the wheel head. Drill the
bat pin holes equidistant from the center the
desired spacing for your bats.
I make my wheel heads this way and they
are superb... balanced, smooth, strong and
easy to put on or take off if needed.

Hi Keba,

You might give Amaco/Brent a try - They still sell the old Amaco wheel

Keba,
To elaborate on what Michael suggested (for those not familiar with
Taper-Lock sprockets and bushings), I suggest the McMaster-Carr website:
