When all else fails.............................

the Random House dictionary offers the pronunciation for "kiln"
as:

lst choice: kil

2nd choise: kiln

Both are correct.

Apparently (not in the dictionary; my opinion
from listening to this discussion go on for the last ten years since
I entered pottery).......... anyway, apparently, today "kil" is
considered to be more or less pretentious by those of us who
opt for "kiln." Those who say "kil" think the rest of us are
ignoramuses who have no respect for the King's English.... which
around these parts we haven't spoken for many a moon.

I have also observed, however, that "kil" is used either by potters around
my age (rickety, falling apart old) OR by former students of pottery who took
a class somewhere once for a Brief Time. Their opinions about what
is Correct or (heavens to Betsy) Proper are very precise and seemingly
leave no room for "both are correct." Of course, those may simply be
the attitudes I remember...... Glad we're not seeing any of that in this
discussion.............. maybe they're all dead or locked down somewhere.
By this time, the World As Is must have driven them certifiably nuts.....
