I'm sorry to jump in without having followed this thread earlier.
Has anyone suggested Pellon? Pellon is a man made 'cloth' used by
people who sew, as interfacing. It is @ $1.59 -3.00 a yard.
I cut it to size [perhaps full width plus 16-18 inches long ] and use it to
back clay before putting it through a slab roller. Use like cloth with two
pieces, top and bottom. It can be used many times, has no weave, is easy to
handle because it is slightly stiff, and clay doesn't stick to it.
Any fabric store will have it on sale.

So is the big problem that the cloth has lost it's new-cloth
stiffness? Why not give them a good iron and starch them? I'd be
doubtful too about any sort of painted surface.
