the facts about the unsolicited email about the kiln post sale

Dear clayarters:

PLEASE...

Everybody chill out about this "spam" sent to many of us by Bill's
former student Rob of Bear Creek Pottery.

I just spoke with Rob. He seems like a sincere, nice man. He is not
the evil empire. He is not a spammer.

Here are some facts:

1) The email addresses DID NOT come from clayart's listserv subscriber lists.
I received a copy of the email from bcpottery, too, but it was not
sent to my clayart email address... it was sent to another address
that I never use for clayart.

2) Rob is a naive Internet businessman. He's new at it. His web
site isn't working. The company he paid to do it either hasn't
finished it or is incompetent.

3) Rob said that he paid $1,000 to the company (GBC in Wash, DC?)
that prepared his catalog to send it out to a pottery-related mailing
list. As I said, he's naive.

Welcome to the Internet, Rob.

Now... let's say that Rob or GBC did get the addresses from clayart.

What purpose is served by posting diatribes to the list complaining
about it? Do those of you who did receive it think that 2,370 people
care that you got a piece of spam? Do you think that 2,370 messages
about one piece of spam would be beneficial to anyone?

PLEASE, if you get spam, report it to your ISP, or learn how to
report it to the sender's ISP/server. Keep your complaints off
clayart.

Peace, love, and understanding,
Maurice
