Is anyone currently using or used Stephen Hills glazes or been to a =
workshop and have notes on his glaze application ?? I have had a desire =
to try then for some time. Now that I have a gas kiln I have been =
experimenting with them. I have all the recipes that he uses. I just =
don't know the order that he sprays them on the pots. I have tried =
spraying several combinations of his recipes with little success. PMI =
had an article with him spraying his glazes and I have that but it is =
short and leaves a lot of info out. I'm getting great colors but no =
matter how thin I spray them on or what order I spray them in they run =
off the pot. The foot ring stops most of the glaze but I wind up with a =
lot of glaze piled around the bottom of the pot or on the shelf. There =
doesn't seen to be any single glaze that is causing the running but when =
combined that's when the problems seem to start. I'm sure that one or =
more is being sprayed on too heavy but I can't figure which one.

I've e mailed Stephen but have not received a reply as yet.

Thanks for any help!!!

Hi ,
I too tried out his combos in the gas kiln - great colours, but the
strontium crystal matt results in an awful sugary feel that just sets your
teeth on edge - just feels awful to the touch even if sprayed with his other
suggested glazes on top. I did not get them running too much - just enough
to blend the colours and look great. I did the str cry matt as a base and
then the others sprayed very thinly on top.
With that rough surface I did not feel they were useful except for
sculptural - even then it would have to be something that you would not
touch. However that could be due to the clays that I am using - several
different Tuckers clays.

At the Stephan Hill workshop I attended he stated that he is doing single
firing. So he is spraying the glazes on bone dry greenware. He uses as
many as ten glazes on a pot so each glaze must be applied very lightly. A
single glaze may be applied only to a small part of a pot. A quick glancing
puff of spray. And a very slow ramp to temperature.

Hope this helps

You don't want make Stephen Hill's work, no matter
how good his glazes are. Do your own experimenting,
and you'll have good glazes that are YOUR work.

Many of Hill's glazes run; that is how he gets the effects
that he gets, in part. Generally speaking, keep the layering
to the top third of the pots, with only the base glaze going
to the foot. And test the base glaze - if it runs and you don't
want it to, adjust the glaze to make it more stable.

Remember that he's been doing this for a lot of years, and
you should not expect to master it in a few firings. Try
again. The journey is much more interesting that the arrival.
