We are building a gas kiln with soft brick interior.
We are looking for info on best coating for interior.
I read the archives that tout ITC for salt kilns.
Is the info valid for salt?
Do you recommend any others?
Thanks for your help.

Don -
In my experience, ITC on softbrick does not hold up in salt unless you only
salt very lightly. In soda, a light saturating coat of ITC holds up pretty
well if the kiln is only lightly used. We tried this, but we fire our soda
kiln a lot, and several years ago we gave up on softbrick soda kilns.

As far as I know there is no other available coating that will allow use of
softbrick in a soda kiln. At one time Wil Shynkaruk at Moorhead State Univ.
in Minnesota was experimenting with zircon coatings for salt and soda, but I
have not heard anything about the results of that research.

Our soda kiln is hardbrick on the hotface and softbrick on the exterior
except for the header courses and port liners. I know that it takes more
BTUs to fire it, but it's holding up very well, and that makes up for the
increased fuel expense.

Hi Don:
=20
There is another coating recommended to me by Donavan Palmquist who builds =
awsome custom kilns. It is called MACOTE, sold by Smith Sharpe Refractories=
. They advertise in CM, PMI, Clay Times. Also, Harbison Walker mfgr's. a co=
ating for the interior that will resist sodium. If you want more infor you =
can contact me off list and I'll give you the particulars. By the bye I hav=
e no vested interest in either of these companies.

Dear Don Whitehouse,=20

Please be aware that the chemistries of Vapour Glazing with Sodium =
Carbonate and Vapour Glazing with Sodium Chloride are very different.

Materials that will resist corrosion by one of these compounds may not =
necessarily resist corrosion by the other.

Ivor Lewis.

We have used Itc on out softbrick/hardbrick/fiber salt kiln with mixed results. We built this space
age kiln after Mels farm kiln article in CM.As far as itc The fiber worked best. the hardbrick was ok
as well-apply thin coats. The soft brick needs to be wetted and apply very thin coats do not get a
thick coating as it will spawl. I have almost perfected a new salt coating for soft bricks /fiber and
hard brick/ Been testing it last 4 fires. I may sell it if I feel its worth my time to make and sell. The
binder is the biggest woe. Mell has some photos of our kiln posted somewhere. The fiber roof is
made from out homemade modules. I need to write an article for CM on this kiln(did the phots
already)-lifes just to busy for that now.I'm a full time potter past 30plus years and salt firing is my
relaxment with clay. Got a show upcoming back to studio.
