credit card servers

Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone on this list is using the credit card merchant
company that is listed on the potters council website. Off hand I don't remember
there name but I think I remember that if you are a member of the potters
council you can get either some kind of a discount or decent rates. I am
wondering if this is true in practice? So if anyone is using them please let me
know if you are happy with them and if they have been fair, upfront and
truthful. Or if any one else has a credit card merchant that they use and are happy
with I'll welcome that info also. I need to find someone new kind of fast so
under the circumstances with the clayart hours feel free to contact me off
list. Thank you

I use Paymentech and have been very happy with their cheap rates and
efficient service.
One major "but": They were quite slow setting up my account. This was
while I was dealing with the guy who initiated the process. Once I
was set up the whole thing was smooth. You just need to lean on him
to push things along. Call him every day.

I have been thru 4 carriers in past 20+ years
I'm now with Merchantwarehouse.com and have got a super rate ( two of us potters searched out
the best deals and service) and they have had great service-no contract -you can cancel anytime-I
bought the equipment as its cheaper. I highly recomend them

So the Potter's Council deal with Paymentech is:
Swiped Transactions processed same day- 2.22%
Keyed in Transactions(no card present) processed within 2 days- 2.52%
Per Transaction Fee 15 cents
Monthly Fee 3.50
No Minumum Monthly transaction amount, so you only pay 3.50 on months
when you have no charges.

Can you give a recap of the Merchant Warehouse deal?
I realize it would have to be very general since there are so many
variables in % for different kinds of cards.

I was with Paymentech for years. They were fine, but didn't offer a store
and forward option. I'm now with Mobile Artisans (started by artists) and
swipe my cards at shows, plug in and send them when I get to a hotel or
home. Works for me.

Here is the breakdown-You did not post the cost of equipment or what type it is??
As I'm a on the road art fair potter I need wireless the cost of the
Nurit 8000 GPRS unit was $629
There are many different types of cards all at different rates so you need to compare the same
types to get to the bottom of that-for warehouse or anywhere ask about what card type for the
quote
swiped cards(which are 99% as its a wireless unit) only a few phone orders) are
1.69% for consumer credit or Debit
1.89% for rewards or world cards-this is way higher for most other severs
$5.oo per month for customer service which I can say is super
O contrac
O Cancellation fee-
O application fee
O Monthly minum
O programming fee
O set up fee
19.95 monthly wireless fee-unlimited access
My total bill on non used months is 24.95.
Last server was Costco-this is a better deal-I did check out Paymentech
and did not go with them- But I can switch whenever I need to with no pain.
If you do not need wireless they offer some better deals and if its only needed a few months there
are also better deals. There is cheaper equipment but I needed a unit that worked all over the
west and this one does. My contact guy is Chris Georgiades-800 941 6557 exten-2240
They offer a referal deal which I'll gladly split with you (100$)if you sign up and mention me but I
really do not care- only offering as we both make 50$. Good luck let us know if you find a better
deal. Call this guy and talk story he will e-mail you a exact quote.

SO been there done that ! They lie through their teeth, or leave out
critical info. I had the hardest time figuring out all the questions
to ask. I had a Lynk account for awhile that cost me way too much. I
thought I had asked all the questions but they slipped one past me:
There was a 3000 gross charge sales/month minimum in order to get the
good rates. If you were under that you paid 20.00/month.
And I was in a contract that took forever to end....

Be careful out there!

Thank you for the info. I recently switched to a different server after 8
years with Retriever, I had been fed up with them for quite a while. So when a
sales rep came into my shop I gave her the time of day to hear what she had to
offer. This companies rates were better but she lied--alot. For one thing
she told me that my rate would 1.78 across the board. Whether I swiped or keyed
in and no matter what kind of card it was. I am getting the 1.78 on regular
cards but I found out that she had lied about the other rates- if I key in a
card or if I take a corporate card, card with rewards, etc. I checked out
the places mentioned and I saw the rates for paymentech, now the worst part
about the situation is that the rates I am getting are a little better then
these other places. I am really pissed about being lied to but if I switch I
will be cutting off my nose to spite my face!

what is the company you recently switched to?

I have been using a wireless system, Way2Pay. I am hoping they upgrade
the equipment soon but it is worth it. Had to get used to it and it can
be finicky about its connection, it does store info for later upload if
needed. It is as small as a cellphone with a swiperslot on the side. A
mini printer works with it via remote.
generally my mnthly is 16.95 for the connection. card fees are 1.99 to
2.99% depending on rewards or manual entry which I don't do unless I take
a card over the phone.

As with any financial endeavor, the devil is in the details. Probably
somewhere in the paperwork is a line that says, "we can change the
terms of this agreement at anytime for any reason". That's the line
on every credit card offer I get through the mail (except Capitol One
which seems to have at least some ethics). It's the reason why people
who've always paid their bills on time suddenly find themselves
paying 27% interest. I don't take credit cards. Send me a check.
People are basically honest (at least those who buy pottery) and
always do.

Hi jennifer,
The worst part of all is that I had been through this once before so I did
learn what questions to ask! This "thing" just lied her butt off. She also told
me there was no contract that I could cancel whenever I want but now they're
telling me I could but it costs $295 to leave the service. So according to
them I can't ever stop taking credit cards with them. I can't see how I can be
held to that forever it just doesn't seem legal? The contract is written in
a way that things aren't clear. I probably could and would win if I ever
wound up in court with them but who the hell wants to do that? I am going to
check out a couple of other places but like I said before so far they are giving
a better rate which is the worst part. If I stand on my principles I'll only
spite myself, but if I do find someone that will give me better rates I
already figured a way out and they will not be able to get me.

At the suggestion of folks on Clayart, when I started
doing PayPal sales I opened a separate bank account
only for PayPal. When I get a payment from PayPal,
it immediately gets transferred to my "real" account,
so, should something come up, PayPal only has access
to a few $$ I leave in the secondary account.

When I signed up to take credit cards, I decided to use
the PayPal account for that as well. I sure don't want
them to have free access to my business account. As
soon as the secondary account builds up a hundred
dollars it is transferred.

Anyway, I think this is excellent advice, and I'm glad I
did it. Should push come to shove, my real account is
protected. Dealing with credit card people is a mess. I'm
not happy with my company. I never know how much
I will be charged for a transaction. As a careful and
knowledgeable businessman, I hate it that they basically
have free reign over what they will charge and I don't
understand it and can't do anything about it. It is certainly
not the same as what I was told when I signed up!

I have another year to go on my 3-year contract. It is
a simple matter, and free, to open yet another account, so
I will probably, to make sure the break is clean, open a
new bank account when I change credit card companies.
I just don't trust credit card companies, and I will never
give them the account number of a bank account that
has a significant amount of money in it.
