notes on pittsburgh restaurants

A bit late, but better late..... I did send this reply during the time
clayart was having problems, but did not see it posted in the archives.

Jim Bowen asked about Pgh restaurants, and Logan mentioned Primanti
Brothers. Primanti's is a sandwich place, and I don't believe it is even
open for dinner.

For dinner a lot depends on what you like to eat. All of downtown Pgh is
within walking distance of the Omni William Penn, and Station Square is not
far away (and one station on the subway, which is only underground in
downtown). I can only tell you about the places I've been to.

You would want to make reservations at all the ones below.

I've had a number of excellent meals downtown at: The Carleton Restaurant,
the Common Plea Restaurant, and the 1902 Landmark Tavern.

There are 2 high end chain steak houses downtown, Morton's Steakhouse and
Ruth's Chris Steak House. I've been to Ruth's Chris and it's overpriced but
excellent. I've heard the same about Morton's.

My personal favorite is: Le Pommier, a French restaurant in Southside, a
taxi ride or car ride away. I find Le Pommier to be well worth the trip from
downtown.

My other personal favorite is: The Grand Concourse, just across the
Monongahela River. It's near downtown, easily walkable in nice weather. It's
a large place, a former train station, known for fish, although everything
is excellent. Ask for the River Room when you make your reservation, and
you'll have a view across the river of downtown.

I went through a long list at:
http://pittsburgh.about.com/od/restaurants_downtown/Pittsburgh_Restaurants_Downtown_Pittsburgh_Dining.htm
to select the restaurants I've been to and enjoyed. I've been to some of the
others on the list, and none were bad. We lived in a Pittsburgh suburb over
33 years, but like most residents on a budget, we didn't eat out all that
much.

With a car, there are a number of other excellent restaurants in the
Shadyside section of Pittsburgh, many high end for Pgh, which means plan to
spend upwards of $50 each, without booze, tax or tips, although at some
places you can eat for less, if you pick judiciously. There are also a bunch
of ethnic restaurants in Oakland, the University Section of Pittsburgh,
priced MUCH lower.

Before NCECA I'll try to remember other good restaurants in and near
downtown Pittsburgh and those aren't even including my favorites in the
eastern suburbs where we used to live.

Sorry, I am not aware of any vegetarian restaurants in Pittsburgh, but I'd
bet you'll find vegetarian offerings at almost all restaurants. Vegans may
have a harder time.

Perhaps that CM/PMI listing mentioned by Bill Jones will have some that I
don't know about.

Srees Foods - Indian Vegetarian - about 4 blocks from the Omni.
Don't see any others close by in a web search.

There's a number on the south side on East Carson (not terribly close)
Quite a few out in Oakland (even further)
Couple out in Squirrel Hill (even further)
Couple out in Robinson/Greentree (other direction, definitely driving)
