can i get a purple glaze from manganese? (^6 ox) here's one

updated mon 3 mar 08

Sally Guger on tue 19 feb 08

I've only used my 200 gram sample of this glaze -but it's a very nice satin matt deep purple color- seemed to be a good fit on white or a dark tan clay. I probably found it in the archives- don't know what RR thinks of it, I hope its food safe. I use pre-'99 GB.
Could someone tell me the difference between magnesium and manganese? I have some of both. Thanks. Sally

Semi-gloss Eggplant
45.7 Soda Feldspar
15.2 Flint
12.7 Talc
12.9 Gerstley Borate
9.0 Dolomite
4.5 EPK

Add:
1.0 Bentonite
2.0 Cobalt Carbonate
5.0 Manganese Carbonate

What adjustments would I do to this recipe to take it to cone 10? I need a
cone ten plumb-color for some Lenten bowls next Tuesday.

Hi Sally,

I am assuming you want to hear what I think about this glaze - that is a
lot of Manganese and the silica is just over the bottom limit we recommend
for a stable glaze - I assume it will leach manganese and cobalt into
acidic food if the glaze is exposed long enough. The MgO is oversupplied
but we never did the experiments to see if that is a problem.

It would be a good idea to test with a lemon slice over night to see if
there will be a shadow.

Hi Miles,

Leave out the GB - that would be #1 test - then add 1 each of EPK and
silica (flint) for #2, Add 2 of silica and EPK for #3 and add 3 each for
#4.

Best to do 500 gram batches and weigh carefully.

Thanks Roy;
I did compare this glaze formula in INSIGHT with a target formula: Target
16 -green and Cooper Cone 10. I'm very new to the procedures. After clicking
the amount changes button to get the RO unity to match I found that your
suggestions are right close except that the Custard feldspar and silica are
in near equal amounts in my (best matched) recipe. All the batch formulas
I've ever used had at least 1/4 more feldspar than flint.(so this will be a
new view)

I'm on my way to testing it out tomorrow.

I've just begun to read Magic of Fire book. Could you tell me what FORESIGHT
is? Is it another software program that is separate to INSIGHT?

Hi Miles,

Foresite is a data base type program for storing your glaze recipes - I
think Tony Hansen is incorporating it into his current versions of Insight.

You can ask him directly at Tony Hansen
