Sally,
Magnesium oxide (MgO) is an alkaline earth oxide (the lightest of all
of them), and a flux. Manganese oxide or dioxide (MnO and MnO2,
respectively) is a transition metal oxide, and used as a colorant - it
tends to flux glazes a little, and is sometimes used to produce
metallic effects. MgO is supplied by such things as dolomite (a
mineral mixture of calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate), light
magnesium carbonate (MgCO3, synthetically precipitated - fluffy and
white), and magnesite (mineral magnesium carbonate - white, but
dense). MnO2 is more commonly used than MnO, and is a slightly
brownish or purplish black (MnO is green), and rather dense.
Regards,
Tim
