I'm sitting here with a hand thrown clay mug (obligatory clay content)
full of hot chocolate (obligatory chocolate lover's content) in my hand,
sipping away, trying to figure out how to configure Filezilla FTP Server
software behind a Linksys Wireless Router. I've been at it for hours.
HELP! Sombody, HELP!
Thank you so much!!

Hi John;
I use filezilla regularly to update my website and also use a linksys wireless router. I didn't have any problems. I downloaded filezilla from the internet and went through the install process and that was that. I don't recall having any 'configuring' to do. what kind of problems are you having?

I can understand the frustration. Setting up a server behind a router
is NOT easy.
Steps you'll need to do -
* Set the server to a fixed IP address (not mandatory, but it makes
the router configuration MUCH easier - if you don't, then periodically
you have to reconfigure the router because the servers address has
changed...)
* Configure the router to pass FTP traffic to the computer you're
running as a server. For Linksys, that's usually on the router's
Application & Gaming tab. At a minimum, you'll want to use port
forwarding for the FTP ports - port 20 and 21. Alternatively, set the
server's IP address as the DMZ server port - but be aware that that
opens EVERYTHING on the computer to the internet, acting as if you
hooked the computer to the internet directly - no protection.
* Configure the firewall on your system to pass FTP traffic inbound &
outbound. Windows has a default firewall in many cases - and if
memory serves, it's a bear to configure to allow FTP.
* Note that many ISPs don't allow you to operate servers, so the ports
may be being blocked by the ISP as well - which you can't do anything
about directly. In cases like this, the best solution is to add some
brandy to the hot chocolate and kidnap a good geek.
* Once that's up, it should be straightforward to get Filezilla to
respond - but note that if you're trying to get to it from outside,
you have to connect to the external IP address of the router, not the
internal address of the server.
Too short an explanation, but hopefully it points you in the right
direction - feel free to message me if I'm online and I'll try to help
you out (my IM address is BruceGDC on all of AIM/Yahoo/MSN messengers)
(If I don't respond, I'm probably away from the keyboard and forgot
to set my away flag).
