hi, everyone.
the top part of my kiln is firing cool... and while i was reading up on
how to offset the thermocouple, i spent some time pondering the orton
cone chart.
at the bottom is some fine print that i don't understand:
//Temperatures shown are for specific mounted height above base. For Self=
Supporting - 1=BE"; for Large - 2"; for Small 15/16"
/
Can anyone tell me what this means?
I use self supporting cones, and for the life of me i can't figure out=20
what is 1-3/4" high.
thanks in advance.

Sabra,
I agree the wording is a bit confusing... Since cones are impacted by
gravity it is important to set them the same way every firing. Cones =
are
designed to be set at an 8 degree angle and the exposure (the distance =
from
the tip of the cone to the base or cone plaque (where the cone has its =
first
chance to bend) is different for all three cones.
The good news is since you are using self supporting cones, the 8 degree
angle and 1 3/4" distance is already built in. If you measure from the =
tip
of your cones down the cone 1 3/4" you will end up at the angle where =
the
cone bends. (This is the place where the cone first has a chance to =
bend).
If you were using large or small cones, you would need to set them in a =
cone
plaque or pat of clay to support them. In addition to mounting them at =
an 8
degree angle, you would want to make sure that 2" was exposed above the
plaque for the large cones and 15/16" exposed for the small cones (if =
you
wanted to use the cones as designed/tested and match the chart). I hope
this has helped.
Best regards,
Jim Litzinger
