re-fired ware/hairspray

Hair spray/yes, a clayart poster suggested this technique a few months
back. it just adds a tacky surface...the glaze holds a bit better.

i have found that any re/fire takes a great deal of care in the
early stages. it is almost like once firing.
many bad things can happen to already fired ware during a fast
heating of a kiln(platters). so:
i pre heat. 8 hours, like i always do.
i let the pots dry for two days before firing.
all the pots.
glaze tuesday, fire thursday. i never load pots right from the
glaze bucket into the kiln. then turn it on high...go like blazes.

i know many do that, but i really think the loss factor is too high.
and, why the rush?

( we do that sort of thing at `hay creek`, but time is always a factor
when you only have 10 days to get things done....and there is always
that new glaze one just has to try...so dip/add to the shelf, fire away.)

the rule in the japanese pottery of mr. uchida...any pot can be re-fired
once. and, many of his were re-fired with just a drop on glaze rubbed
into one pin hole. make it perfect.
he never did that twice....he said it would weaken the pot far too much.
