black as black

Hi,
I have a friend who has been using the corda seca technique on tiles with the
manganese/oil mixture, and I tried making a faux version using black stain
with wax over the top to try for the same affect.
My question is: what are the ingredients in black stain???
Is it manganiese as well, and do I need to be as careful as with the other
mixture??

I've heard scarey things about manganese, so I want to be sure I know what I
am working with.

Thanks,

Michelle--
I don't know what corda seca technique is, but don't put manganese in
anything that touches food. Fine for tiles.

We're trying an experiment at our studio, mixing stains and oxides with
cold wax and drawing with the wax on bisque then glazing to see what
we get. We fire to ^6. I'll let you know what it looks like.

Michelle,
You might try using the colbolt black mason stain. It gives a nice deep =
black
with a little depth to the color. This can be added to a gloss or matt =
clear
glaze. Make some test tiles, start with a 100 gram batch of glaze add to =
it1/2
a gram, mix it up and paint a stripe on your tile and label it. Then add
another 1/2 gram, mix it up and label it( your now up to 1 gram total) then
repeat the process until you reach saturation which is usually about 10=25 =
in a
glaze solution, fire it and see what =25 you like best.
