I am pretty much an all-electric firer at the moment, but every now and
then I get this itch for a salt or soda kiln. Can anyone tell me
approximately how much it should cost to build a relatively small one --
say 10 cf?
Thanks,

Hi Fred,
I have not built one yet but have been checking. (BG) Single brick wall
using hard brick, interior area for two 12x24 shelf, so 36" wide, 27" deep,
30" tall + arch will give you a stacking area of around 10-12 feet,
depending on the arch. Around 600-700 bricks depending on the flue
construction, I would surround it with fiber or another layer of soft brick
- drives up the cost but helps the fuel costs. Total interior volume is
around 18-20 cubic feet so a couple MR-100 burners are on the smallish size
but would work - just take a little longer to get to temp.
Around here brick costs just jumped (due to higher fuel costs) from $1.14 to
$1.65 each. The MR-100 burners are pretty cheap, but like I said they are a
little small - a bigger burner can be bought from Ward a couple hundred.
Boil it all down to final costs - it should cost you around 100 to 200
coffee cups ;O) or two nice loads.
WARNING!!! Personal opinion segment -
Kilns do not cost us money they make us money. My 100cf cart kiln cost
$12,000 to build - each load I have fired has had a retail value of $5,000 -
subtracting the production cost of that load, I still netted $3000 from the
load. Three firings and the cost of the kiln is recouped. I fire it every
two weeks - pretty fast payback on the investment.
Have Fun
