The worst thing I ever did to my neck, was sit hunched over at a low power wheel
for 10 years. Didn't matter much whether it was the Shimpo, the Brent or the
Creative Industries. Hours of driving hunched over the steering wheel would do
the same thing (and in Nevada, it's hours to ANYWHERE). I got so bad that I was
locking up my neck about every 3-4 weeks and would be miserable for a week to
10 days. It took about a five year subbatical from the wheel and about a year of
chiropractors to fix it all. After the chiropractor, I learned to feel it starting and to
keep it from happening.

I DO undoubtedly have arthritis but am working out via Physical
Therapy, which is helping. However, my first diagnosis came long
before this latest genuine bout. Terrible pains in my neck... sharp
pains, plus dull aches all the time........ hurt to move it at all.
Diagnosis was arthritis. Came home a little discouraged since I'd
been told there wasn't a lot that could be done.
Next day #1 walked through as I was on the computer with Clayart.......
said, " your neck will never feel better if you keep peering up from
under your brows to see the screen....... puts your neck in a godawful
position." Light dawned for both of us simultaneously! hmmm
How long had I had the new Dell with the larger screen? About 6
months. How long had I felt the intense neck pain? About 5 months.

#1 adjusted the screen until it felt right. Never any more signs of
arthritis in the neck ... at least, no more pain. Tests indicate that I
never had arthritis in my neck!
When I asked the same doctor (not my regular doctor but the one
who had diagnosed arthritis) months later if I should be further
concerned about my neck......... his response was, "Why? Nothing
is wrong with that neck. Given your age (hate that expression!), your
neck is in perfect shape.. would be even for a woman much younger.

Joyce, thanks for the anecdote about good posture. Before
personal computers, typists kept whatever they were typing
from (i.e. a steno pad) on either side of the typewriter.
This resulted in tilting the head all day long as they
looked at their steno pad.
A chiropractor told me that this caused serious neck
problems. She centered a copy holder above her typewriter to
avoid the head tilt. You accomplished the same thing by
adjusting your monitor. This principle applies to posture in
any repetitive task.
Occasionally I stand with back to a wall and heels, hips,
shoulders, and head lined up against the wall. This forms
the habit of good posture, which has an amazing effect on
physical and mental well being.

Anyone who has arthritis should know that glucosamine has been researched in
Europe and used for animals in America for many years. It has been found
very effective in treating arthritis. When I was first diagnosed with
arthritis I was given pain killers to help deal with the pain (I'm sorry but
the only pain killer that is going to numb the feeling of a knife being
twisted inside your body into your joints is going to be one that makes you
really dopey which I can't afford). I went to for a second opinion to a
highly thought of specialist and he told me the story of his introduction to
glucosamine. He had been asked to be on a news program where he would
represent the 'medical' viewpoint vs the self medicating farmers who had
found that if glucosamine worked on their animals, it would work on them.
Being the man he is, he thoroughly researched the topic and took the side of
the farmers. He recommended that I take around 1000 grams a day. Within a
month I could not tell I had ever had a problem. Every once in awhile I
start forgetting to take my pills because I simply don't feel pain anymore.
When that happens I start to feel an ache in my joint and I get back on
schedule - the pain goes away. There are different kinds of arthritis -
mine is the kind where the cartilage simply wears away with age. I cannot
speak to the other kind. Donna

somewhere i heard and picked up the idea to add 3 or 4 inches to the back legs of my wheel chair. with the chair tilted maybe 30 degrees forward that's 30 degrees my back and neck do not have to adjust for.
that helped my low back a lot.
i also keep a block on the left foot to make it about the height as my right foot on the peddle of the wheel.
balanced feet is also handy for the overall body.

i use glucosamine and it works very well.
however my wife can't because portions are made from shell fish, therefore has iodine and she's alergic to iodine and shell fish.
she was surprised when her doctor recomended she take glucosamine, knowing she was alergic to iodine. except he never read the lable and never knew it was not to be used by those with iodine alergies.

Dear Donna Kat,=20
Would you please confirm that you are ingesting 1000 grams, that is =
about two and a quarter pounds of Glucosamine every day.
<could not tell I had ever had a problem.>>
This seems to be a lot more than the 1500 milligrams that are in the =
tablets I take, one per day.
Best regards,
Ivor Lewis.

South Australia.
