I used perfoated kiln shelves in Spain for a raku kiln during my
workshops in '96 and '97. I would really like to find a source for them
on this side of the Atlantic.
The shelves I saw had holes 1" in diameter or so (metric). The holes
were spaced
about 2-3 inches apart. They worked great for my raku kilns- giving
even heat distribution. They were made of a fired tan clay about 7/8 of
an inch thick.
Does anyone on the Clayart list know where something like this can be
perchased
in the US?
TIA

Marcia,
Here in the UK perforated shelves were/are being sold as a cure for
uneven firing, and they're horribly expensive. My Raku kilns are round,
and quite by accident I found that square shelves were the answer,
especially if the corners miss the wall by about 1/2". Fire gets
deflected into the setting by the corners. Believe me, it works (and
it's cheaper!!!!!!!!!!!).

I spoke to someone there several months ago who said they had Corolite
(?) shelves perforated with 3/4 inch holes.
