vince's handbook

Dear Clayarters -
My good friend Darrol Schillingburg paid me a great compliment by
enthusiastically recommending my studio handbook. I appreciate the response
I have received as a result of Darrol's post, but he should not have sent
that message. We only make enough copies for our students. Sometimes there
are extras left in the summer, which the workshop participants occasionally
buy, thus Darrol's copy. I am currently working hard on a re-write for
publication, but in the mean time we are not set up to offer the text to the
general public, or even to the wonderful folks on this list. Hopefully you
will see the handbook soon in your neighborhood bookstore (I wish!!!). When
it is out, I will figure out some way to mention it on Clayart without
seeming mercilessly self-promotional.

Dear Clayarters -
My thanks also to Sharon Wetherby for her enthusiastic post about my
handbook, but PLEASE do not call the Craft Center and try to order it. The
price she gives is a minimal markup over printing costs, and is for my own
students. Because of the ridiculous funding structure for our gallery, even
if there were profits from sales of this handbook, they would go to TTU and
not to the Craft Center, so we simply cannot afford to do it. As mentioned
in a post yesterday, I am working on a re-write for publication, which I
hope will be ready soon. Please wait for that.
Thanks -
- Vince

Hey Vince,

I'm really surprised that you chose to say this in public as well as in
private. I have some tolerance for being "shoulded on" in private, but none
in public. What I should or should not say in public is not your's to
decide.

I apologise for any inconvience my speaking up about the qualities of your
studio manual have caused you, and expect no thanks for any pre-press
publicity.

Dear Vince,
Lana Wilson's Handbook and Rose Gaudet's Paper Clay book are both
inexpensively produced. .. . Same as Val Cushing's Handbook. They all
seem to have been done
by "desktop publishing" and printed via Kinko's or a similar system.
I think it is fine if you have a good idea to share. I have all of those
previously mentioned books. My former students think I should someday
write one as well.
As for all of us teaching, I think we get concerned over the price of
textbooks on top of the price of lab fees and /or clay costs. . . And I
think we can all tell that there are lots of answers to all the many
clay problems encountered in the studio. That's why we like this format-
"Clayart".
Don't feel merciliess if you mention you've got your book available. I
always enjoy your "two cents".

Dear Vince --

I for one am very interested in your book. I enthusiatically wrote down the
pertinent information only to find moments later that it's available to a
very select group...::sigh::...DRAT!

I have received many posts similar to this off-line, and it does warm my
heart. There really is no way to offer the handbook for sale to the general
public through the Appalachian Center for Crafts. Neither the Craft Center
nor I would derive any profit from it at all. I can only promise you that
if I encounter severe obstacles in my efforts to get the book accepted by a
publisher, then I will publish it and sell it myself, as some others have
done. One way or another, I will let you all know what happens. Thanks so
much for all the interest.
