carbonates vs sulfates

I saw a magazine ad in which U.S. Pigment Corp. was offering both metalic
carbonates and matallic sulfates.. What advantage or disadvantage would one
offer over the other? Has anyone out there ever substituted copper sulfate
for copper carbonate? What were the results? ....Marshall

This is a reply to Marshall. I recently have begun experimenting with
sulfates. They seem to dissolve much more readily in water and can bring
about the "water color on porcelain" effect people have been speaking
about. They are painted on green ware or bisque, but the piece is fired
again before being glazed. I believe many are poisonous.

I would appreciate a 1800 number for the pigment supplier you mentioned if
you get a chance to send it my way or to the list.

I tried cobalt sulfate and iron sulfate. Arne Ase uses primarily
clorides. The colorants were applied to bisque and fired to cone 6 in an
electric kiln. The colors were pale but nice and looked best without a
glaze on top.

Why not check my article on the use of sulphates applied on unfired
glaze? Check the Sept. l996 issue of Ceramics Monthly.
