I just read this in the Digest:
"Ivor and Olive Lewis wrote:
'Dear Lili Krakowski,
To be honest, I cannot understand what will be learned from this exercise
that would not be acquired from taking a cast from a rock.I suggest far more
would be gained from an extended course in Drawing from the Model and then
using the human form as a means of learning basic sculptural modelling
techniques. Far more exciting.'"
NO idea why this was addressed to me--though it's nice to be remembered.
Also no idea what I am supposed to have suggested! Even I know that Jesus
said not to cast the first stone, NOT to cast a stone first!
One of the problems of portraiture is that proportions are hard to get. One
often thinks someone has a long nose, when actually sunken cheeks give that
effect. Etc.
Although I draw adequately, I have found a friend and a [now digital] camera
the best thing. Put on a swimsuit or a Tshirt and tightish underpants, and
have photos taken from different sides....About ten, as the photographer
walks around you. Have those photos enlarged--or, if you know how all that
works, and can afford it, have transparencies made you can project on the
wall.
Works fine. Esp. for those parts/angles you can not see. (When you do look
at them, do it in a soundproof room!!!!!!!!)
