Surfing with Helen Bates - March 11, 2008 - Canada, Australia, USA

Hello Clayarters...

Carole Hanson Epp (Saskatoon, SK, Canada)
(Very little text to background contrast, but images, once located, are=20
fine)
http://www.caroleepp.com/
(Canadian ceramic artist and writer; received her Masters Degree in=20
Ceramics from the Australian National University; currently the Visiting=20
Artist at Red Deer College in Alberta.)
"Her ceramics branch off into two distinct bodies of work wherein she=20
produces lines of sculptural and functional objects. Her sculptural=20
based work incorporates the production of collectible figurines whose=20
traditional genre is subverted by revealing a more truthful=20
representation of behavior and morality in contemporary society. An=20
analysis of consumer culture is unveiled and dialogue is presented=20
regarding the personal relationship one has with global events and=20
politics. The functional domestic wares investigate contemporary=20
industrial design aesthetics and their sustainability through handmade=20
qualities, including what has traditionally been deemed glaze-faults, in=20
combination with the clean and calculated look of mass-produced wares."
See Carole's entry also at the Dashwood Gallery Site:

("Mel Robson is a Queensland based potter whose diverse rangeof ceramic=20
vessels are both functional and decoratively sculptural. In her domestic=20
ware the espresso cups and beakers are sparingly decorative and fine.=20
Robson=E2=80=99s most recent porcelain forms are feather weight, paper fi=
ne and=20
entirely sculptural. Incorporating images of sewing patterns, wall paper=20
designs and recipes, the translucent, bone coloured works are raising=20
all sorts of questions as to their very survival of an otherwise robust=20
medium. The original forms are thrown on the wheel and then a plaster=20
mould is made from this form. The actual pieces are slipcast in=20
porcelain from this mould. They are fired once (quite low) and then=20
sanded and polished. they are then fired again up to 1300 degrees=20
embedded in a silica powder. This stops them from warping and slumping=20
which can happen with such fine pieces. They are then polished again,=20
and the imagery applied using ceramic decals (like a transfer) that she=20
has made to her specifications from imagery that she scans and then=20
fired again. It is a long and involved process, and many break along the=20
way! Although time and experience is lowering the number of breakages.=20
These pieces are actually quite strong once they have been fired.")
