I am not against a theme, but I feel that it should be something that allows
everyone to come up with something within their own style. So if there is a
"theme," it must be some general idea or concept rather than specifically
defining a particular direction or narrative.
Jeff, as I said, I certainly did not mean any disrespect towards you, but I
feel very strongly about what I refer to as "cultural misappropriation." It
is rampant in the craft world. We are all influenced by other artists and
other cultures, but the objective is usually to synthesize something new and
original. So, as Mel says, perhaps we could suggest that people come up
with interpretations of the concept of "desert" or "desert landscape" in any
way the artist chooses to interpret it. That does leave things pretty wide
open. Every wood-fired pot kissed by ash would qualify.

i do agree with vince on this issue.
and, the idea of theme/ing the show is great.
it would be easy to make a few small adjustments
like:
desert landscape
sand and rock
big sky \
cactus.
and, i know jeff was being metaphorical.
he spoke to me at nceca and was much more
general in his theme idea. he would not be
disrespectful of anyone.
and nothing could be more true than vince's comments
about any ethnic work.
i support jeff's idea.

I'm with Vince on this - I don't enter theme shows.
I just don't like the idea of organizers telling me what to make. I work
hard at making my own pots.
I know that many potters are good at making what others want - I have
nothing bad to say about that - in fact I admire that skill - just not my
way.

if there has to be a "theme", something vague like "WILD THINGS" is open enough to include whatever you want... just like those themes from high school proms or rose parades... everything seems to fit with the right amount of creative writing along with it.
