Thank you, Ron.

I think I get most of the above about firing through the quartz inversion
and water smoking stages; at least, enough that I no longer have obvious
problems firing past them.

However, I've lost
my notes on atmospheric water and chemical water ....... and for the
life of me cannot recall when which burns away.....nor exactly what they
are. Would somebody please explain to me once again what happens
here, and when I need to approach cautiously and slowly.

Thank you.

In the Mojave where the Mojo can tell that we're approaching glaze firing
again, which means the gas kiln will be doing its roaring bit ........ for
some reason she starts fussin' and threatenin' everytime she passes........
she's six now and has experienced many gas firings, but this behavior is
new these past six months or so............... of course, she threatens also
the many wildflowers that are blooming everywhere at the moment. Where
is my gentle puppy who used to go out first thing and give kisses to each
blossom as well as to the new cacti .... and lie down in the midst of
the hundreds
of quail moving through ???

Hi Joyce - atmospheric water is that water still in the clay even though it
appears dry - I should have included water of plasticity as well - after
those are gone then the danger of explosion is gone.

The water smoking means - that chemically combined water that is liberated
between 400 and 600C - after which clay can no longer be reconstituted into
plastic clay.

Is that enough? - it will have to be because thats all I know.
