this is a good suggestion for everyone.
go to a high end china store/macey's, or a other
big name store.
look at the place settings they are selling.
check the price range. molded, made by machine.
probably no higher than cone 5. top coat fired at
cone 022. that is the gold rim.
you will be shocked.
have your customer do the same.
(i just did this with entire setting for 16.
and, all the accessories...in the temmoku hare's fur.
tea pot, casseroles..the works.)
had her go to macey's. fine china.
select anything that she would normally buy.
pay me the same.
of course i suggested she look at the chicken
cookie jar from mexico. wholesale cost in mexico. slip mold.
.59 cents.
there price. $124. 50...and they cannot keep them
in stock, been that way for two years.
it sets the table very well for the potter.
they are not shocked a bit when we quote a price
the same as the mid/range british/blue import..

Mel, Then there is the other side....I was in Sam's last weekend and
there was a boxed set of 4 place settings. Nice red glaze with a
butterscotch rim. I actually liked them. They were $49.95. My
heart sank. I sell 8 place settings for $450, a mug, a bowl, and a
plate and I am certainly not at the top of my game as some of you
are. Go to Target, go to World Market, go to Pier One. Nice stuff.
Most people don't know that they are molded or who made them or to
what temp they are fired. Most people don't care. I don't think
people looking for pottery are even looking in the fine china
department of the big stores. Is that really a good comparison?
Back in the day, fine china was for Sunday, Christmas dinner,
birthdays, Easter dinner, etc. The pottery was for every day
eating. My mind set has sure changed but I wonder how many others
besides potters have?
Just some meanderings.
