Dear Claudia;

That is a real nice suggestion for Paul. I like the notion of the 2"
s.s. offcuts for retainers. Nice little kiln, BTW!

Paul, Remember you will be picking that lid up to fill with wood every 10=
-20 minutes for lots of hours. I made my lid with advice from Steve. It i=
s heavy sheet metal with a handle, lined with 1" of fibre glued with sodi=
um silicate and backed with half inch block insulation. I drilled lots of=
holes in the sheet metal and used kanthal wire and 2" sq stainless off c=
uts to hold it together. It is very light and easy to hold up with one ha=
nd while filling the box with wood. I just used a line of hard brick odd =
sizes to back it. Works well and no more sore muscles from lifting a heav=
y lid. If you look at the DVD of Steve firing his kiln you can see it in =
action. =20

Hank and Claudia- thanks for the replies. I needed to be remided that the lid warped because of the difference in expansion of the top and bottom piece, and that a piece of steel alone shouldn't have the same issue.

I already have the 1" fiber board, so I may use Claudia's method. I had planned a big ole counter weight for the cast slab idea. I'll "weigh out" my options. Bad pun intended.

Unloaded Fri Night- should have pics to post this week
