Does anyone have experience with Newcastle insulating firebrick? I am
preparing to build a new kiln and our closest IFB supplier only carries
Newcastle.

Also, does anyone know of any refractories suppliers in the Maine, New
Hampshire area?

i've used a lot of new castle ifb made in massilon ohio plant. they are
good brick, the rougher kinda of ifb rather than the chaulky kind. i use
2800 and 2600 degree in the firebox area then 2300 for the rest of the
interior, i go 2600 or 2800 to the top of the bag wall. i use 2300 on
the outside. the 2300 bricks used in the firebox area tend to shrink way
too much, thus the higher degree bricks there. good luck, btw i get
seconds from the massolin plant for 50 cents each,

Garret,

I do not believe Newcastle makes their own IFB, I think they
resell someone else's under their own lable. If they do , I
personally don't think much of their quality control. For
most of us a good supplier for all kinds of brick is A. P.
Green. They make their own IFB and its pretty good. I think
that Thermal Ceramics makes the best IFB, but I use a lot of
A.P. Green's as well.

The closest place they have to you is in Orange, CT . Their
phone is: 203-795-6031. They keep a good stock of stuff.

Once this summer, when I needed something in a big hurry for
a job in New Jersey, my Philadelphia source pulled some
stock from Orange simply because he had it in stock.

Don't worry that they seem far away, they deliver quite
quickly and are used to smaller orders. There are some
companies out there that are pretty good, but don't service
you well unless you are really large.

good luck,
Cameron

Garret....
We purchased the Newcastle IFB's from Eastern Refactories in
Lewiston, ME... probably the source you are now looking at.. There is a
slight difference in size between the 2300's and the 2600's so I recommend
using only one type of brick in the IFB structure of the kiln, other than
that the IFB's have done fine for us.. I can't compare them to AP Green
IFB's because have never used them or even seen them before... I have heard
that AP Green is supposed to be the best.. ....Marshall

Hi Garret!
Try Lewiston Refractories for your kiln building needs (can't find their
number, try information).
