It was a long wait for some of the chemicals and equipment I needed, but the
first results
of my study of the chemistry of iron red glazes is up at
http://sankey.ws/glazefe.html
The results, if not exactly decorative, show several clear results:
1. Calcium is required to get red from iron,
2. To get a tomato red also requires phosphorous,
3. The red improves when magnesium is added to these two.
Many thanks to Vantuil Varges for his assistance in getting some of the
equipment.

John --
This is a really interesting set of tests --
thanks for putting up the pictures. It was
also interesting to read of your efforts to
do the tests in an organized fashion ...
the solubility issue can be really daunting
at times.
Best wishes -- Steve Slatin
