iron glazes in the micro

I already noted years ago that my microwave hates iron rich glazes. Never
went beyond that.

Maybe some noble student eager for Brownie Points (get it--brown=iron) from
Prof. could do some tests, to see if it is iron
in the glaze, how much etc, or if it is iron in the body, or a combo of the
two.

Dear Lili,
I have no doubt that you had a negative experience
with an iron glazed piece placed in a microwave. I
will argue very respectfully--I very sincerely hold
you in the highest regard--that the iron glaze and the
negative microwave experience were absolutely
coincidental.
Ron Roy designed some iron glazes, about 10, 15
and 20% red iron oxide as I recall, and I made the
glazes and fired them--one set in oxidation, the other
in heavy reduction--on some mugs which I then tested
in the microwave. I could boil water in every one and
pull it from the microwave bare handed.
Coincidentally I tested a number of problematic
mugs (they got hot in a microwave) from clayarters at
the same time. These kind donors allowed me to do
destructive testing and I found all the problems had
to do with porous clay. The clay absorbed water. The
water got hot. The iron in the glaze just didn't make
a noticeable difference.
This is in the archives long back, about 8 years
ago or so, if my feeble memory serves me.... :-)
I do hope spring is bringing green and outdoor
life to your neighborhood.
Dave Finkelnburg, in from watching long-billed
curlews feeding in a semi-arid Idaho grassland where
they will soon nest and rear their young--strange
behavior it seems for birds from the ocean shore...
