From Artdaily.org for March 8, 2008:

ST. IVES, UK.-The internationally renowned Leach=20
Pottery, in St Ives, Cornwall reopened its doors=20
on 6 March following a =A31.7 million=20
transformation. It is set to become an=20
international centre of excellence celebrating=20
the life and influence of its creator Bernard=20
Leach. The new ceramic training and business=20
facilities, education resources and a showcase=20
gallery secures a legacy for the pottery in a modern setting.

Bernard Leach, was one of the great figures of=20
20th Century art, playing a pioneering role in=20
developing ceramics in Britain and around the=20
world. He trained as an artist in London and then=20
as a potter in Japan where he became fascinated=20
by the two very different cultures. The=20
establishment of the Leach Pottery in 1920 led to=20
the development of his reputation as a key=20
pioneering figure in the ceramics world.

Collaborating with a young Japanese potter, Shoji=20
Hamada, Leach built the first oriental climbing=20
kiln in the West. For over 50 years Leach taught,=20
wrote and trained other potters, combining=20
Japanese and European aesthetics through his=20
work. Today, many international links are still=20
in existence between Leach Pottery and Japan in particular.

A partnership between the pottery and University=20
College Falmouth, will enable students to work=20
alongside established craftspeople to develop=20
their techniques. There will also be mentoring=20
for business start-ups and studio space for=20
emerging talent. The Pottery has scored a=20
significant coup in attracting Jack Doherty, the=20
chairman of the Craft Potters Association of=20
Great Britain and the organizing committee of=20
Ceramic Art London, as its new lead potter.

The transformation has been funded by, amongst=20
others, Arts Council England South West, the=20
Heritage Lottery Fund, the European Regional=20
Development Fund, the Rural Cornwall & Isles of=20
Scilly Partnership, Penwith District Council,=20
Cornwall County Council and St. Ives Town Council=20
and trusts and foundations, membership=20
subscriptions and by the local Leach Pottery=20
Support Group and it is expected that the=20
rejuvenated pottery and visitor attraction will=20
host up 30,000 visitors per year. Local people=20
from St Ives and surrounding towns and villages=20
have also been deeply involved in bringing the=20
Pottery back to its former glory, and working as=20
volunteers to help run the new centre.

Nick Capaldi, Executive Director of Arts Council=20
England, South West said =91The work of Bernard=20
Leach and the Leach Pottery were an essential=20
part of creative life in Cornwall. Bernard Leach=20
also played a seminal role in shaping the future=20
of contemporary ceramics. We are delighted to=20
have supported this important refurbishment=20
project, ensuring that the pottery can continue=20
to inspire new generations of makers.=92

Chairman of the Bernard Leach (St Ives) Trust=20
Limited, Lady Carol Holland says, =91The local and=20
international influence and stature of Bernard=20
Leach is undeniable. He was a man who, through=20
his life, his work and his writings, has made a=20
unique contribution to our cultural heritage, to=20
the development of the art of ceramics and to the=20
careers of many potters. He had high standards=20
and was sometimes a tough judge, but I hope that,=20
if he could see it, this living and working=20
commemoration to all that he stood for would meet=20
with his approval. The Leach Pottery will once=20
again become a place where quality work is made,=20
young potters are inspired and trained, and=20
visitors are introduced to the Leach heritage and=20
the significance of ceramics in the cultural world of today.=92 =20
