Hi, I thought I would share some more info on this.

A somewhat local single mom was tried in court and found guilty. She had music on her computer apparently she couldn't prove she paid for and said she was sharing with friends, used p2p, etc. How did they know? The government has full access rights to any ISP data logs. That means they can see what you download or what internet sites you visited. Yup, really.

Now, if they are going to make an example out of a single mom with music, what do you think they will do with other folks? Other than the fact that it isn't ethical, is it really worth the risk or stress of stealing digital media and having your name on a computer database that indexes downloads at your local ISP (that the government has access too and at any time could prosecute you? I don't think so. If I can't afford it, I don't buy it. If I missed it, I try to download it from that station if they post it for download (and many are doing that now).

If someone shares something with me, I listen to it and then destroy it. If I like the music, I buy it. Got to give artists their due.

When I was teaching I had students who had entire 80 gig hard drives of music on their computers. Ripping off artists. They don't care because its easy and free.

Imagine if someone in the future could scan your pots, out-put it to a future CDC machine and kiln, and wa-lah, an exact copy of your work--and as many as they wanted to make and share. Think about it. A person is taking something that is not theirs or giving something not theirs to give. I figure it all adds up and is accounted for one way or another.

I think that what you say may have at one time been the case, but no
more - at least where video or music materials are concerned. For music,
there came into being many peer-to-peer software programs like Napster,
Bearshare, Kazaa, that allowed people to "share" the music across the
internet - copies of it as it were. No sales, just free copies of the
music from one computer to another. The "Powers That Be" managed to kill
that off based on "copyright infringement". Very heavy lawsuits in court
- which the "Powers That Be" won. Same is true for video materials.
Except for the power of the dollar, I don't know how this shut-down was
accomplished, because you can go to any library, and make as many copies
of anything there as you want for personal use, or for teaching, and
that action passes muster. But not so for music outside a library - or
video.

I'm not an attorney nor do I play one on TV, but I've heard of this
thing called Digital Rights Management and it makes a can of worms
look homey. It's a veritable snake pit! Check out http://www.eff.org/issues/drm
and wikipedia for starters, which is about as far as I care to take
it.

OTOH, DRM is looked a little peaked these days: http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/01/10/sony-drives-another-nail-in-the-drm-coffin
But then again, http://gizmodo.com/369235/amazon-kindle-and-sony-reader-locked-up-why-your-books-are-no-longer-yours

If you accept that there is a difference between sale and license,
maybe you can make sense of this: http://gizmodo.com/369235/amazon-kindle-and-sony-reader-locked-up-why-your-books-are-no-longer-yours

Just wait until your clay licensee decides they need to de-constitute
all your clays until you pay a monthly fee!
