4x4 porcelain

i should give credit to this body.
it is the old alfred throwing porcelain.
many years in use.
more than likely a val cushing invention, it is not a
porcelain addicts body as it has a great deal
of ball clay...and that means it throws pretty well.

those that seek `pure white transluscence` would scorn this body.

but, each has a vision as to what they want their
pots to be, look like. and, that is more than respected.

i would think it would be fine at cone 6.
it does bond well with most any body.

i used white slip for years that was touchy...came off....
and spalled all over the place.
this does none of that. it was the perfect find.
i use my own clay body, strained for colored slips.
obviously, the closer your slip is to your own clay body, the
better in most cases.

what i like best about 4x4 is that you can just grab
an ice cream pail, fill it four times with each ingredient
and you have clay. pug it...throw a few days later.
or, half cup of each into a blender, add water to taste
and you have white slip. (taste hell, you could brush your
teeth with this slip.)
of course you can add oxides to color it.
`i don't play doctor science with clay bodies.`

i like easy.

so laying around

Dear Jim;

PV will give you more silica than spar, but it is also somewhat
plastic. it is a weathered Rhyolite. Think petuntse.

Cheers, Hank

Thanks Hank,
I will have to see what I can do to reduce the silica to offset that and
increase the spar. I seem to remember a porcelain body being posted using
Plastic Vitrox in the past . I will have to check the archives. I am just
looking for a friendly body that looks like porcelain. Transparency isn't a
necessity right now. It will be a small hand mixed batch of maybe two or
three hundred pounds.

In the past, it was said that PV clay was could be substituted for
Cornwall Stone. Make a fusion button test of the material and fire it
to cone 10. =20
Mix it 50/50 with Custer or any other spar to see the melt properties.
The unity column etc. won't be the same but, you are looking for a
substitute.
