new clayart software

Dear Mel -
How did it come to this? Who made these decisions? Was this really done
without any discussion or input from the Clayart membership, and if so, how
the hell did that happen? I am very glad that there will be a new
email-based site, but it is not even remotely acceptable that the new ACerS
web-based discussion board is going to be called Clayart. It is not
Clayart.

I think it is wonderful that ACerS is setting up this web-based discussion
site. More power to them, and I will gladly participate, but IT IS NOT
CLAYART! The mere fact that it won't work well for people who don't have
broadband makes it exclusive, and pretty much contradicts what Clayart is
all about.

As one of the most long-term remaining members of Clayart, I feel like we
are getting screwed. I feel marginalized and helpless. It pisses me off.

If this is going to proceed, then let ACerS come up with a new name for
their website-based discussion board, and let the new email-based discussion
list be Clayart. That is the only fair and reasonable thing to do.

the new acers clayart site will be
joined with their online magazine.

the clayart site will be web based.
you must go to the website to read it.
notification will be email...so, if you post
a message, when it is answered, you will
get an email to check your question.

but, you must go to the website.
there will be many changes..some will
love it...if you have high speed internet.
dial up will be awful.
and, if you are out of country, with dial up...forget it.

so.
things will be launching around may 15-25th or so.
it will take some getting used to.
i will continue to run things...but, my part will be
much smaller.

there will be categories:
glaze/clay
studio practice
philosophy and discussions of aesthetics.
vendors and workshops...
you can pick the area you want to read.

for those of you that are email purists and love email
based discussion, we will accommodate you.
see my clayart website.
please bookmark my website...there will be more
announcements and instructions.

Call me skeptical. So much for ACERs listening to the overwhelming
support that was expressed for an email forum. This has the look of a
2-humped camel when what we needed was a horse. Splitting the group
in two will certainly end Clayart as we know it. Whether it will be
reborn as something better or slide down the hill to a slow death--
well, time will tell.

John

I want to echo the input from Vince & John.

i love clayart, warts and all.

and part of what i love is this wealth of knowledge pouring into my mail
box.

i often learn about things i didn't even know existed....thinks that end
up changing my clay life.

this is the beauty of a "push" system... where all the mail is pushed
out to everyone.

with a "pull" system, where i have to go to a site, and then click on a
subject area.... there will be whole areas of learning & discussion that
i'll never see.

i think this is VERY sad.

This seems odd and yet I know Arnold Howard and anything he would be involved in would be on the level. As to Acers and Mel, what is the motivation here? Like Vince and John, I am wondering what is going on?

Well, for once we agree. Nobody has ever been able to explain how ACERS =
came to "own" Clayart in the first place. How did that come about? Now =
it appears they want to abolish Clayart and split it up.

I have said for awhile that Clayart would work well as a Yahoo or Google =
group - it takes about 10 minutes to get it set up so Mel and Joyce or =
whomever can moderate the thing, and then guess what - either the =
membership email list can be entered all at once, or folks can be =
directed where to go to join, which also takes just a few minutes, and =
then we're up and running. =20

If there's going to be an email list on Yahoo anyway, let's just all =
jump over there and ditch the web-based thing.=20

I remember a few months ago there was some discussion of how ACERS was =
going to expand Clayart, they got some web-whiz guy or whatever, and the =
discussion was email vs. web based. The response seemed to be, from =
what I saw, that a web-based group is less preferable, b/c one would =
have to remember to go there to participate. I fall in that group. If =
Clayart is web-based, I'll be signing off.
