Look at setup. (right click on the ball) It downloads new
definitions and program updates.

Set AVG to auto update and you won't have to worry about getting
confused. AVG will take care of downloading for you.

It appears to only get updates within the current version - I just did
the update and it updates to a newer 7.x engine, but not to the new 8.
Thanks for the heads up on that, Gail!

and watch it - it will automatically uninstall your older version, but UNCHECK the checkbox about the toolbar!

I believe that it only gets the virus definitions that way, not the new version of software....

Sorry Folks! I confused AVG with Avast. I was the person who
first recommended AVG here, but when I went broadband, I switched to
Avast. You can get a free copy here:

Lee, why do you prefer Avast?

Ah! Okay, Lee - you had me goin' there. I was thinking, "ball? what ball?", but since I had already installed the upgrade to version 8, I was going to have to look at a computer that still had 7.5 on it to verify. You have saved me the trouble! Thanks!

I have used Avast, too - for awhile, there was some conflict of AVG with some other program (some CD burning software, I think?), and you had to update the other to use the AVG. It was just easier to load up Avast at that point. I haven't noticed any big difference in their abilities, but I don't get a lot of reports back from my customers, anyway.

Thanks for the clarification!

It acts as a firewall and is more complete for broadband.
I had both running for a time and it catches things that AVG misses.

I also recommend three spy killer aps: AdAware, Spyware
blaster and Spybot Search and Destroy. Just google for the links.
