raku: the naked and the clothed

I did my raku firing yesterday. First load was the naked raku. I
learned why you don't cover the pieces with slip ahead of time. The
slip crackles as it dries and it falls off when you touch the piece.
That was the bowl which had the sole purpose of holding the jewelry.
The jewelry and buttons came out really nice. The pieces with the
colored slip were so-so.

The second load was raku with glaze. Now I finally understand the
"turquoise burst." It does look like the sample in the store - but
only if there's incomplete reduction. With a good reduction the piece
isn't turquoise, but a wonderful metallic. At least I know I can buy
more of the stuff.

There will eventually be photos.... but I'm out of energy right now
and haven't cleaned up the pieces.

My teacher will be doing a raku firing next semester with the class.
Note to self: This does NOT mean I should spend the summer making 75
raku pieces. Second note to self: Forget the first note to self and
experiment like crazy.
