sunflower yellow glaze

The only satisfactory bright clear yellows I have found for cone 6 ox have
been with stains.
And by the way, I've found the colour of the stain in the package to be
closer to the final
result than most published colour swatches. Make sure you test the specific
stain with your
base - some yellows bleach with some bases. I'm using Mason 'Zircon Yellow'
with
VC Gloss Base to make spectacular banana slugs for indoor gardeners.

I have been asked by a friend to find a sunflower/golden=20
yellow glaze. It can be either cone 6 or 10reduction. I=20
have Mel's Fat Whit with titanium and rutile under test=20
now, but if there are other ideas I would love to see=20

Loren,

I have a wonderful sunshine yellow which uses praesodymium
oxide for the color. It also makes a great Faux Celadon if
you use a smidge of copper carbonate and a dash of black stain
for the colorants.

The yellow may be a bit too intense, in which case you can=20
cut the color with a tad of iron, say about 1-2%.

The usual cautions, your mileage may vary, TEST, TEST, TEST!

26 May 03: Test tile is delightful! A magnificent celadon-like dolphin g=
ray-green,
breaking well over texture and pooling in depressions. Glossy, deep, and=
rich.
Might even use less copper, and a little less stain.

10 APR 05: I changed the colorants. Added praseodymium stain and took ou=
t the
copper and black stain. I may add iron later, after some tests. Also, =
need to
add a tablespoon or two of epsom salts solution to assist suspension. NO=
TE: Try
substituting part of the Kona F4 with Cornwall stone, say 25 F4 and 25 Co=
rnwall.

It took me a couple of days to look at the composition of this stain
because, apparently, Mason is discontinuing this stain! It is no
longer on the web site, so I needed to check my materials at the
studio. (They supply a handy chart with directions on how to
reproduce this and the bunches of other discontinued stains-- all
using other discontinued stains. Sigh.) I guess I'll be buying a lot
of 6407, right away, in preparation for the drought to come. Anyone
on clayart who uses Mason stains should check to see if their stains
will still be available.

Anyway, 6407 is made from praesodymium, iron and zirconium (so, not
toxic) and will fire to 2300F.
