"The Functional Pot: Tools, Tips & Techniques" with Bill vanGilder :: =20=

July 11, 12 & 13
Fri: 6 pm to 8 pm, Sat/Sun: 10 am to 4 pm
Room 420, Goggleworks Center for the Arts, Reading, Pennsylvania
Instructor: Bill vanGilder

Every potter has a list of WHAT they want to make. HOW to make it is =20
often the question. Learn some of the answers from internationally =20
renowned potter Bill vanGilder, Clay Times Teaching Techniques =20
columnist, and creator/host of Throwing Clay on the DIY Network.

During this three day (one evening and two day), information-loaded, =20
demo-workshop some 50+ making techniques will be demonstrated in =20
answer to these "how-to" questions; techniques participants will want =20=

to use and adjust to fit their own future work. Shortcuts, tips and =20
tool-use at the wheel will be shared through demo after demo.

through demo after demo. Hand building functional forms will be the =20
focus during the morning of day two.

Throughout 40 yrs. of making functional pots I've collected hundreds =20
of making techniques used to make specific pots, both wheel-thrown =20
and hand-built;

Chinese Pottery Brushwork :: August 23
Saturday: 10 am to 5pm
Kevin Lehman Pottery, Lancaster, PA
Instructor: Li Chao, People's Republic of China

Li Chao will demonstrate traditional Chinese brushwork on plates and =20
vessels. This type of traditional brush work has been expressed on =20
Chinese porcelain for 2000 years. Typically it is done with a cobalt =20
blue stain. Today in Jingdezhen, China this tradition is being =20
carried on traditionally as well as in new forms of expression. Bring =20=

bisque ware to create your own brush work. We will provide both the =20
cobalt stain and the bamboo brushes.

Throwing, Altering & Carving :: Sept 6 & 7
Sat & Sun: 9:30 am to 4 pm
Kevin Lehman Pottery, Lancaster, PA
Instructor: Tom & Elaine Coleman

Immerse yourself in the work and teachings of Tom and Elaine Coleman, =20=

two of the most respected clay artists in the country, for this two =20
day demonstration/lecture at Kevin Lehman Pottery in Lancaster, PA.

Tom will express his approach and philosophy to clay through a =20
balance of slide shows, demonstrations and lecture. The slide show =20
will provide a connection of Tom's past and present work. =20
Demonstrations will cover throwing different forms and altering =20
pieces. Lecture will range from decorating techniques, formulating =20
porcelain clay bodies and slips, marketing your work and taking =20
professional slides and photographs of your work.

Elaine will be providing an ongoing porcelain-carving demonstration =20
during both days in tandem with Tom's lectures. Through carving away =20=

and adding upon layers, she gives dimension to her pots, which are =20
then enhanced by the use of celadon glazes. Students are asked to =20
bring their own green-ware on Sunday to participate in breakout hands-=20=

on carving sessions. Bring questions and problems to ask these =20
masters to help you with during the weekend. The workshop will be =20
based around what students which to see demonstrated.
