chunks coming off of cone 06-04 clay

updated thu 5 jun 08

Cindy reed on sun 25 may 08

I am posting this for one of my class mates.

She has mixed up the following clay recipe.

Low-fire talc clay

Ball Clay 45.9
Silica 200 (flint) 20.2
Talc 12.2
Whiting 6.1
Gray Grog (20 mesh) 15.6
100.0

This is a recipe she got from one of her professors.

When she fires to 06 small chunks are coming out of her pieces. She is
making sculptures so they are thicker than a thrown piece. Her professor
said she must have some plaster in her clay. She is sure that is not the
case as she mixed up the clay herself in a big dough mixer which was clean
when she started.

Any ideas as to why this is occurring will be greatly appreciated as she is
working on pieces for her senior show and is not happy with the results she
has been getting.

Thank you,
Cindy Reed

Cindy,

Others more experienced and knowledgeable than I may have more specific
answers, or may have additional questions for your friend, but from what
I have been reading today, it seems that too large mesh of whiting could
be a culprit, just as bits of plaster can be. Finer mesh of either
should not be a problem.

Could be the whiting balling up during the mixing - best to dry mix
ingrediants well before adding water - and sieve the whiting through 50
mesh.

Any glaze will mix better if you ADD the dry ingredients to the water.
Initially the glaze may be thick, if so add water to the consistency you
want. Plaster spits should revel themselves after firing or even weeks
later. The tell tale result is when you see a small piece of plaster in
the center of the pop out.

Ron and Bill,

Thanks for taking time to respond, I have passed this on to my friend and
she will try your suggestions.
