I have a large metal cylinder (16" high, 9" diameter) that I want to
use as a mold to make a container from slabs. Will it automatically
come away from the metal or should I coat the metal with something?

I use pvc and card board tubes, but this is the same for metal. The
clay will stick to the metal so I would wrap the tube loosely in two
to three layers of newspaper. Once the slab stiffens enough to hold
its shape remove the tube, leaving the paper. Then you can reach in
and remove the paper. Make sure that the slab does not extend above
the top of the tube as that will make it more difficult to remove the
tube.

I use PAM food spray, olive oil, vaseline, or WD40 machine oil spray on met=
al and glass forms and even plaster forms as a release agent.

Coat the clay with a light dusting of cornstarch.
