No technical question. No pottery wisdom. Continue to read if you have the
time and interest. I will not be insulted if you delete this message now.

We've sold the house in NJ. I'll be happy to send my tips for getting that
house sold to anyone who asks. Chocolate chip cookies helped. Neatnik
husband was also a godsend.

In this market we will not have to worry about any capital gain. We have
been in this house for 3 1/2 years. New roof, extra 100 amps of power for
the kiln and hot tub, added insulation, replaced windows, partitions, many
outlets and fluorescent lights for the pottery studio and woodworking shop,
helped sell the house but certainly didn't show us any return other than the
fun of doing it and using the space. Long ago I decided that the money we
spent on my husband's redos e.g. insulating and doubling the sheet rock in
the garage, should be considered a mental health expense.

We've bought a 20' shipping container and are about to start loading the
woodworking tools and pottery equipment. We're selling all furniture,
donating all coats, sweaters and shoes. Only hanging on to computers and
files, shorts and sandals. We know our priorities.

We've had the land on Kauai since the 70's. Two houses in long term rental.
We'll move into the smaller of the two and will be building a woodworking
shop with small gallery eventually. The existing 15' x 20' storage shed
will be the pottery studio. We'll be starting all over again, bringing in
the extra power and updating the renter worn house.

But first we will go sightseeing. Have planned a trip from Niagara Falls to
Maine to Florida and on to Victoria B.C. via Chicago, Yellowstone, Glacier
etc. Looking at about 8500 miles in the pickup with truck tent. Will camp
where we can, to save money but these old bones do need a hotel room from
time to time. I've planned a stop in Seagrove, may investigate Haystack and
Penland.

Our departure date will be June 30th. As it gets closer I may send out a
list of route #'s to see if any of you living along our tour route have
suggestions or want us to stop and look at your studio or pottery. My
husband would love to see what woodworkers are doing. We've agreed to a
limit of 4 hours driving a day and stopping often to stretch our legs.
July, August on this route will be hot in places. We may be asking for use
of the garden hose to cool off.

I will be setting Clayart to "NO MAIL" just before we leave, but will check
personal e-mail along the way.

If you are able to visit Haystack, I recommend it. They have an
absolutely beautiful setting, on Deer Isle. Further, the pottery and
other areas are open to see, and there is always a lot going on.
An exciting place to visit, for those who like to work with their
hands. Don't know who'll be presenting at the time, but someone(s)
who know what they're doing, generally. Take lots of drinking water,
though. They have plenty, but it is full of sodium. Coffee & tea are
plentiful and good-tasting. But the side effects are a bit, ummm - puffy.

Enjoy your trip. There is no place more beautiful than this United States.
Sounds like you'll be seeing a lot of it.

My wife, Sandi, and I moved to Isle of Hawaii in 1986 with
our two cats and two dogs. I will always cherish the
memories of that adventure and the time that we spent with
my parents and sister while we were there.

I had many local friends in Hawaii. When we left two years
later, they gave me a hand-made knife with koa wood plaque
and a going-away party.

Did your pets have to quarantine? They import most of their clay?
Gas must be high there.

It is one place I would consider moving to, but only if they had snow.

Yes, Hawaii has a quarantine. It was far worse than anything
we had imagined.

I think they have loosened up on the quarantine. Check with the state
webpage. I seem to recall that there are some requirements as to the
timing of shots and the time you arrive--as in the closest to the
shots and arrival. Don't recall the details, but I'm sure you can
find the info on the web.

It's a good idea to visit your pets while they are in jail--good for
them, good for you and you can keep tabs on how well they are being
taken care of.

Yes, the quarantine is horrible. Many animals came out of it with behavior
problems and ended up being put down.

Today the quarantine can be avoided but you really have to jump through
hoops. The pet must have had at least two rabies shots in its life time and
the last rabies shot must be more than 90 days. Then the pet also needs a
Rabies Titer. The blood must be received at the lab at least 120 days
before the flight to Hawaii. Only two labs in the country do the test one
is in Texas the other in Kansas. There are of course fees attached to all
of this. My husband and I disagree on this. Our dog is 15 years old and
aging. I've started the process but he wants to leave the dog behind.

First a thanks to all those who sent advice for the trip. I keep going back
to the AAA trip tik sight and moving the route a little this way a little
that.

First stop 6/30 Bethel New York for the new Woodstock Museum. That was my
era. Then to Niagara and a short trip across the border. From Niagara on
scenic byways to Weston Vermont, must see that Vermont Country store. On to
Haystack before returning to Bridgton Maine for the family reunion July
6-12. From there to Boston to look at genealogy files for a day and then to
Nantucket and Falmouth (visit Hollis Engley) before on to Mystic, a night
with friends in NJ before taking a look at Cape May which we missed last
time because the last ferry was leaving. Down the Delmarva and across the
bridge tunnel (my husband loves these) to see a cousin in Virginia beach.

The next target is Sea Grove, then Charleston, Jacksonville (a grand
daughter), St. Augustine for the history and then to Tampa (John's Mom and
family). By now we are at least July 21st. Three days in Tampa as company
and fish both start to smell in three days. I want to check out the art or
clay center I've heard is in St. Petersburg.

So far the trip from Tampa is routed through Macon, Georgia because we don't
want to retrace our tracks up the coast and next stop is Penland and
Asheville (possibly Tom Turner). On to Red Boiling Springs, Tennessee
(discovered by John's ancestor), Dover Tennessee (cousin) and Berea,
Kentucky, (more pottery and woodworking and amazing textiles).

To Chicago where a BBQ is planned with friends from the 5 years we lived
there. Then Twin Harbors, MN (another cousin) and Minneapolis (millions of
cousins). Now if we could only avoid the drive across either Dakota and
Wyoming to get to Yellowstone. This may be the point where we break our
rule of only driving 200 miles or 4 hours a day. I'm investigating route 89
from Yellowstone to Glacier National Park definitely a back road. From West
Glacier (Heidi Haugin's studio) west eventually to Hope, BC. So we can visit
Custer Washington (Irene Lawson's studio) on the way to Victoria. Then Port
Townsend, Olympic National Park and at least a ferry ride through the San
Juans. Possibly an overnight and exploration of at least one of the
islands. Then on to my immediate family in Portland, Oregon.

If you have read this far you are a glutton for punishment or are addicted
to travel logs. Do you need to get a life or are you waiting for a kiln to
cool. Watched kiln never cools.

I would love anymore ideas from the group.

Also I will be sending out updates from time to time during the trip. If
you would like to receive the trip reports, contact me directly at
Patty@PattyKaliher.com and I will add your e-mail address to my distribution
list for the trip reports.

Thanks again for all the great ideas so far.

Robin Hopper lives in Metchosin, south of Victoria on Vancouver
Island. The Metchosin Summer School of Arts
should be good for a visit.

Patty,
Please don't race through South Dakota! About ten years ago a friend and I did a road trip out West with Yellowstone as our goal. South Dakota was the next best part of the trip! There are amazing caves, fabulous fossils, Mount Rushmore, quaint old hot springs and the town that grew up around them, the Badlands and Wall Drug. Hope you have time and money to work this all in. I really loved it. --Kim H.
