mixing two sets of trimmings; mixing clay.

Friday I left a sentence out of my remark on mixing one's own clay body.
The message was to mix the non-plastic materials in a thin slurry with just
enough clay to MAKE a slurry, sieve the batch like a glaze, do it a couple
of times, then add to bulk of clay. This to avoid lime pops later.

I have mixed clay scraps together for always. If they are in the same
firing zone no problem. Just remember that you get a hybrid. If one body
is very plastic and the other is not, your new body will be less
plastic/more plastic. Etc. You might want to experiment with proportions

Hi Lili,

You also said that yours was from NephSy - how does one determine what
caused the pop? I recently lost several pieces to lime pops without any
clue what the cause was. Everything in the studio is the same, no new
minerals or clays. I stopped using my big tub of recycle in case it got
contaminated but don't know if it really is the problem.

Thanks always,

There was a case some time back of a West coast clay supplier changing the
fire clay in their raku clay and the new fire clay had lime in it. So the
potters thought they were using the same clay body when it wasn't.
