Dear Clayart Friends

Thanks to those of you who responded to my question on choosing shelves for a
salt kiln. Does ANYONE else out there have experience firing cone 9/10
salt? I am going to be ordering new shelves soon, and I would really
appreciate hearing from you on what type of shelves worked best for you.

our First Annual Fall Show at a collaborative gallery we opened last
spring...)

ALright, I have a question for all you salt kiln gurus out there. I have a
20 cu. ft. downdraft salt kiln requiring 11 or 12 x 22" shelves. I need
between 10-12 shelves. My problem is that the budget doesn't really allow
for silicon carbide, and my experience with them is that they break too
easy, especially for these haphazard college students. Alumina shelves
don't work, been there, done that, don't argue with me if you think they do.
So what options am I left with? Cordierite? Will that work, I've never
used these in a high fire. I've also heard that coating them with ITC will
increase their life, is this true? Any help you can offer would be great!

Hi Brandon,
I'm not salt kiln guru but we have been trying cordierite shelves in our
wood kiln in both chambers the 2nd being salt. We fire them to Cone
12+. They are 22 x 24 x 1. I would definitely coat both sides with ITC
and flip them for your firings.

We have been doing some testing and after 7 firings now, the ones that
we coated on one side and hadn't been turned have warped. So, we are
going to coat all of them on both sides and probably switch to ITC. I'm
not sure I'm happy with the performance of the zirconium coating I'm
using. I should call the company and tell them what's going on. They
are good to work with.

Happy Firings,

ps. we are haveing April weather. I'm worried about my 1500 daffodil
bulbs. many of them are 1-2 inches high. We have lots of winter season
left. Any northern gardeners on the list? I'm kinda new at this and
fretting over bulbs and buds. the lilacs have huge buds on them...
email me off list?
