broken handles

It happened for the second time in a month today. I pulled one of my
porcelain mugs out of the dishwasher to pour myself a cup of coffee and
the handle broke off in my hand. I'd been using this mug for several
months, and had never noticed any cracking with it. I do have a problem
with my porcelain body ( a commercial Grolleg body, whick I frequently
recylcle) in pulling the handles; many crack as they set up before I
attach them, or crack in drying. However, up until a few weeks ago, I
had never had a handle break after it had been glaze fired. I realize
that the crack has been sitting there all along, but I'd like some
advice as to prevent the handles from cracking while they are being
pulled.
Thanks,

Hi kevin,

Sounds like it could be a "fit" problem - I need to calculate your glaze to
be sure though. The post firing cracking is not related to the drying
cracking.

Use old clay for pulling handles - the older the better. Adding a bit of
vinegar to the clay before you pull em may help.
