Hi Kelly,

My sprung arch kiln in Mashiko didn't require any welding.
I bolted the frame together. I used steel angle steel that are
used for heavy duty shelving in Japan and angle iron only at the top
of the side walls where the arch pushes out. It has held up well
over 5 years. Genvieve and others around the world have used similar
bolt together frames and they hold up well.

I know other folks who have used chain or cable and turnbuckles
in a similar way.

I like the beauty of a catenary arch in a larger kiln, but
woodfiring is so labor intensive, that, in a small kiln, you really
need to make use of all the space you can.
