A slightly different approach. I did not catch the temp range for your
firing but If you are firing cone 9-10 or above, try wedging some Laguna
"LongBeach" or Rod's Bod into your current body. this may help where
sand alone may not. Try a line blend of 10% increments. I like LongBeach
as it seems to give better throwing and green strength. Wyndham

Howdy,

My experience with open clay bodies and mixing clay bodies is restricted
to my personal classroom and production experiences. In order to find a
clay body that would almost guarantee student success, a body that would
dry more evenly, withstand thermal shock with raku firings, react well
in various atmospheric kilns, and provide tooth as described by Mel, I
have gravitated towards using a Laguna clay body, Soldate 60, and adding
any red clay such as IMCO's ^8-11 red, or terra cotta clay, or
earthenware for a slightly more iron enhanced palette. For enhanced
textural effects, we have also added sawdust on occasion. My occasional
uses of Rod's Bod have had a less than desirable effect on opening up
the clay body.
