The Tozan Cultural Society can use some help rebuilding the third Tozan noborigama. It is in a new site near Nanaimo, B.C. Canada on Vancouver Island. The floor is in and the walls are starting to go up.

Come and help build it and learn how to build a large wood fired noborigama.
The old Tozan at Malaspina University College had to be torn down.up. The College was building additional student housing right next to the old site. It really was not a good neighborhood for a smokey wood kiln.

The new site is away out in the boonies at the Tamagawa University in Cedar (south of Nanaimo). If you have Google Earth on your computer you can go to the latitude and longitude below and see the site as photographed from orbit last year before construction started.

49*06'32.49"N ; 123*49'37.03".

I used asterisk for the degree symbol here because a degree symbol doesn't work in text mail. You should use the correct degree symbol in Google Earth.

Message from IAN: I just want to give you an update on the Tozan Kiln construction. We have all the floors in & have begun to build walls, etc. We need all the help we can get ,so if any out of town groups or clubs or individuals would like to help we can arrange for people to stay in the dorms at Tamagawa. One or two to a room is 20.00 per person plus 15.00 for linens one night or five. If you bring your own sleeping bags & towels, its 20.00 per night (no linen charge. We can also set up tent sites, provide limited space in parking lot for RV's. We need help to sort and move brick, mix mud & lay bricks. This is a great opportunity to help build a large kiln in a rural setting. Harry Wong can only stay until July 1 so the pressure is on. Why not carpool down here & take a look? Email any questions to me - nattrass@shaw.ca. Can you please forward this info on to members of your local clubs or guilds?

Fred,

I was a good friend of Les and Moe Beardsley, who really started the
Tozan kiln. Les did a couple of years ago. He was a good man!!! I
need to contact Moe to see how she is doing. Let me know when you are
coming up to the kiln as you will probably come through Port Angeles.

When I did a workshop there , there were a large contingent of Korean
potters, male and female Korean dancers. I have some great pictures
from that summer. =20

Bill
